Signs of Believers

‭Mark 16:17-18 NLT
These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages.
18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Source Spirit-Filled Bible: The Scriptures clearly teach that it is the desire of Christ for His followers to perform miraculous deeds as they announce the gospel of the kingdom of God

‭Matthew 10:1 NKJV‬
And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.

‭Mark 3:14-15 NLT‬
Then he appointed twelve of them and called them his apostles. They were to accompany him, and he would send them out to preach, 15 giving them authority to cast out demons.

‭Luke 9:2 NLT‬
Then he sent them out to tell everyone about the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

‭John 14:12 NLT‬
“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.

Source Spirit-Filled Bible: These signs performed by true disciples, confirms that the gospel message is genuine, that the kingdom of God has come to earth in power and that the living and risen Jesus is present with His people and working through them

‭John 10:25 NLT‬
Jesus replied, “I have already told you, and you don’t believe me. The proof is the work I do in my Father’s name.

‭Acts 10:38 NLT‬
And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

Source Spirit-Filled Bible: Everyone of these signs (except for drinking poison) occured in the recorded history of the early church:

(a) speaking in new tongues

‭Acts 2:4 NLT‬
And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

‭Acts 10:46 NLT‬
For they heard them speaking in other tongues and praising God. Then Peter asked,

‭Acts 19:6 NLT‬
Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied.

‭1 Corinthians 12:30 NLT‬
Do we all have the gift of healing? Do we all have the ability to speak in unknown languages? Do we all have the ability to interpret unknown languages? Of course not!

(b) expelling demons

‭Acts 5:15-16 NLT‬
As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across some of them as he went by. 16 Crowds came from the villages around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evil spirits, and they were all healed.

‭Acts 16:18 NLT‬
This went on day after day until Paul got so exasperated that he turned and said to the demon within her, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And instantly it left her.

‭Acts 19:11-12 NLT
God gave Paul the power to perform unusual miracles. 12 When handkerchiefs or aprons that had merely touched his skin were placed on sick people, they were healed of their diseases, and evil spirits were expelled.

(c) escaping death from snake bites

‭Acts 28:3-5 NLT‬
As Paul gathered an armful of sticks and was laying them on the fire, a poisonous snake, driven out by the heat, bit him on the hand. 4 The people of the island saw it hanging from his hand and said to each other, “A murderer, no doubt! Though he escaped the sea, justice will not permit him to live.” 5 But Paul shook off the snake into the fire and was unharmed.

(d) healing the sick

‭Acts 3:1-7 NLT‬
Peter and John went to the Temple one afternoon to take part in the three o’clock prayer service. 2 As they approached the Temple, a man lame from birth was being carried in. Each day he was put beside the Temple gate, the one called the Beautiful Gate, so he could beg from the people going into the Temple. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for some money. 4 Peter and John looked at him intently, and Peter said, “Look at us!” 5 The lame man looked at them eagerly, expecting some money. 6 But Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!” 7 Then Peter took the lame man by the right hand and helped him up. And as he did, the man’s feet and ankles were instantly healed and strengthened.

‭Acts 8:7 NLT‬
Many evil spirits were cast out, screaming as they left their victims. And many who had been paralyzed or lame were healed.

‭Acts 9:33-34 NLT‬
There he met a man named Aeneas, who had been paralyzed and bedridden for eight years. 34 Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you! Get up, and roll up your sleeping mat!” And he was healed instantly.

‭Acts 14:8-10 NLT‬
While they were at Lystra, Paul and Barnabas came upon a man with crippled feet. He had been that way from birth, so he had never walked. He was sitting 9 and listening as Paul preached. Looking straight at him, Paul realized he had faith to be healed. 10 So Paul called to him in a loud voice, “Stand up!” And the man jumped to his feet and started walking.

‭Acts 28:7-8 NLT‬
Near the shore where we landed was an estate belonging to Publius, the chief official of the island. He welcomed us and treated us kindly for three days. 8 As it happened, Publius’s father was ill with fever and dysentery. Paul went in and prayed for him, and laying his hands on him, he healed him.

Source Spirit-Filled Bible: These spiritual manifestations are intended to continue within Christ’s churches until Jesus returns. The Scriptures never suggests that these signs were restricted to the period immediately following Jesus’ ascencion.

‭1 Corinthians 1:7 NLT
Now you have every spiritual gift you need as you eagerly wait for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ.

‭1 Corinthians 12:28 NLT‬
Here are some of the parts God has appointed for the church: first are apostles, second are prophets, third are teachers, then those who do miracles, those who have the gift of healing, those who can help others, those who have the gift of leadership, those who speak in unknown languages.

‭Galatians 3:5 NLT‬
I ask you again, does God give you the Holy Spirit and work miracles among you because you obey the law? Of course not! It is because you believe the message you heard about Christ.

( 4 )

Source Spirit-Filled Bible: It is clear that the followers of Christ were not only to preach the gospel of the kingdom and bring salvation to those who believe

‭Matthew 28:19-20 NLT‬
Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

‭Mark 16:15-16 NLT‬
And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. 16 Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned.

‭Luke 24:47-49 NLT‬
It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’

but we’re also to bring in that kingdom, just as Jesus did

‭Acts 10:38 NLT‬
And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

by casting out demons and healing diseases and sicknesses

Source Spirit-Filled Bible: Jesus indicates in

‭Mark 16:15-20 NLT‬
And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. 16 Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned. 17 These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages. 18 They will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won’t hurt them. They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed.” 19 When the Lord Jesus had finished talking with them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand. 20 And the disciples went everywhere and preached, and the Lord worked through them, confirming what they said by many miraculous signs.

that this signs are not special gifts for a few, but were given to all believers who, in obedience to Christ, witness to the gospel and claim His promises.

( 6 )

Source Spirit-Filled Bible: The failure of this “signs” to occur in the church today is not a failure of Christ to keep His promises. Failure, Jesus states, within the hearts of His followers

‭Matthew 17:17 NLT‬
Jesus said, “You faithless and corrupt people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.”

( 7 )

Source Spirit-Filled Bible: Christ has promised that His authority, power, and presence will accompany us as we battle the kingdom of Satan

‭Matthew 28:18-20 NLT‬
Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

‭Luke 24:47-49 NLT
It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’ 48 You are witnesses of all these things. 49 “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”

We must liberate people from their captivity by the preaching of the gospel, by living a righteous life

‭Matthew 6:33 NLT‬
Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

‭Romans 6:13 NLT‬
Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.

‭Romans 14:17 NLT‬
For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

and by performing signs and miracles through the power of the Holy Spirit

‭Matthew 10:1 NLT‬
Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness.

‭Mark 16:16-20 NLT‬
Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved.

‭Acts 4:31-33 NLT‬
After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness. 32 All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had. 33 The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all.
